Reading in Year 6 at Malpas Alport
Reading is at the heart of learning in Year 6, and we are committed to developing confident, enthusiastic readers. Our daily reading lessons focus on key comprehension skills, particularly retrieval and word meaning, as part of our progression of VIPERS skills. These sessions help pupils deepen their understanding of texts, preparing them for more advanced reading challenges.
To foster a love of reading, we encourage all pupils to take part in Strive-for-5, aiming to read at least five times a week at home. This regular reading habit strengthens fluency, comprehension, and enjoyment.
Our well-stocked book selection includes a wide range of fiction and non-fiction, allowing pupils to explore different genres, expand their vocabulary, and develop their general knowledge. By combining structured reading lessons with independent reading for pleasure, we ensure that every child builds strong literacy skills, setting them up for future success.
