Maths
Vision
At Malpas Alport, we want every child to develop a love for maths and to feel confident in their ability to succeed. Our approach is based on the idea of mastery, which means helping pupils gain a deep, long-term and adaptable understanding of mathematical concepts. Rather than simply learning procedures, children are encouraged to think critically, make connections, and truly understand why maths works the way it does.
We know that learning happens step by step, so our lessons are designed to build understanding in small, manageable chunks. Each new concept connects to what has come before, helping children see the bigger picture and strengthen their confidence over time. We also believe that mistakes are a valuable part of learning — they help us think again, ask questions, and deepen our understanding.
To support this, we use Power Maths, a carefully structured programme that gives teachers the tools to help every child master each concept securely and confidently. By breaking complex ideas into simple steps, children can clearly see how mathematical thinking develops and builds. Lessons are interactive and engaging, encouraging children to talk about their learning and to practise key skills such as multiplication tables and number bonds. Our aim is that the whole class learns together, so no one is left behind.
In addition, we use Mastering Number Programme (Organised by the NCETM). This progamme focuses on ensuring fluency and flexibility with number facts, which will positively impact future learning.
Each lesson follows a clear five-part structure, giving children the chance to explore, reason, and solve problems in a supportive environment. Teachers provide live feedback during lessons and whole-class feedback afterwards, so children know exactly how to move forward.
Above all, we want our pupils to enjoy maths, to feel proud of their progress, and to be able to explain their thinking with confidence. We believe that with the right support, every child at Malpas Alport can be a successful mathematician.
Intent – What are we trying to achieve?
At Malpas Alport, we want every child to become a confident, independent mathematician who enjoys learning and problem solving. Our aim is to help children:
Build a deep understanding of maths so they can apply their learning in real-life situations.
Talk about their ideas clearly and explain their thinking using mathematical vocabulary.
Learn in a ‘mistake-friendly’ environment where getting things wrong helps us learn and grow.
Believe that everyone can do maths — because we truly believe maths is for everyone!
Develop curiosity, resilience and a love of learning that lasts a lifetime.
Our enthusiastic teachers deliver an inspiring maths curriculum that sparks curiosity, builds confidence and helps every child see themselves as a capable mathematician.
Implementation – How do we make this happen?
We follow the Power Maths scheme, a government-approved mastery programme that supports children in developing a secure and deep understanding of mathematical concepts.
Each day starts with ‘6 in 6’, a quick arithmetic recap that helps children revisit key skills and keep their learning fresh. Lessons are carefully structured in small steps, allowing all pupils to build confidence and move forward together.
Teachers use a mix of hands-on resources, pictures and written methods (the Concrete–Pictorial–Abstract approach) to help children understand concepts deeply. Assessment is ongoing, so lessons can be adapted to meet the needs of every learner, with extra support or challenge provided where needed.
We promote a growth mindset in maths, encouraging children to be determined, brave, curious and flexible — just like the Power Maths characters!
Impact – What difference does this make?
Our pupils:
Enjoy maths and talk enthusiastically about their learning.
Are fluent and confident with numbers.
Can explain their thinking clearly and use accurate mathematical language.
Show resilience and a positive attitude towards problem solving.
As a result, children at Malpas Alport achieve high standards in maths, make strong progress, and develop the skills and confidence they need to succeed both in school and beyond.
